A Javanese Philosophy : Hamemayu Hayuning Bhawana

Hamemayu Hayuning Bhawana is actually a part of Jogjakarta's Vision and Mission which entirely is:

Mengasah Mingising Budhi, Memasuh Malaning Bhumi, Memayu Hayuning Bhawana.

A long time ago, after the division of Mataram Kingdom in 1755, two smaller kingdom emerges from the divide, namely Surakarta Hadiningrat and Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat. Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat is a kingdom under the rule of Sultan Hamengku Bhuwono I has a vision and mission to develop into a prosperous and religious kingdom.

The above vision and mission aforementioned above means : to make a world a beautiful place to live by forming a community governed by monarch which has a spiritual community. Although the new kingdom is entitled as Sultanate, it is not an Arabic-cultured kingdom. The kingdom is formed based on the Islamic faith but is formed from a Javanese culture. Therefore forming a unique blend of Javanese cultured based on Muhammad's teaching.

Mengasah Mingising Budhi, Memasuh Malaning Bhumi, Memayu Hayuning Bhawana is now a jargon in the Special Region of Yogyakarta and has become the spirit in developing a pluralistic community.

The Jogjanese (or the People of the Special Region of Yogyakarta) has remembered Sultan Hamengkubhuwana IX as one of the greatest leader of the Mataram Kingdom. He is famous not only as a Javanese ruler but also an Indonesian patron leader. His famous leadership teaching is known as "Tahta Untuk Rakyat" or throne for the people has emerged as a popular prophetic leadership. A popular implementator of this teaching is Joko Widodo (currently a Presidential Candidate of Indonesia). Although born in Surakarta, Jokowi (Joko Widodo's popular name) he embraced the teachings when he was educated in Universitas Gadjah Mada (a university established by Sri Sultan Hamengku Bhuwono IX).

Sri Sultan Hamengkubhuwana IX has implemented the vision during his reign in the former kingdom of Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat as well as his service in the Republic of Indonesia as ministers during several cabinets.

The Archipelago Heritage

I have always been a scholar of life and diversity. I was brought up in the States for more than three years, at time where I can cherish and celebrate "unity in diversity" in a country that consists of various kinds of people with different backgrounds. I lived in the States during the Reagan era, a time where Muslims was still considered  strange in a country with dominant Christianity believe in a modern age. But aside from the strangeness of a young elementary child with a "Muhammad" name, the American people back then looked at us without any prejudice. After 9-11, the "unity and diversity" of the American people was hurt.

Now I live in Indonesia, where "unity and diversity" exist in Indonesia as "Bhinneka Tunggal Ika " meaning " or "unity in diversity" in Sanskrit. I have experienced culture shock when I attended third grade elementary. The same culture shock I experiences when I got back to Indonesia. The same "unity in diversity" but different implication, different social and economical conditioan.

Right now, I am still trying to make a jigzaw puzzle out of our nations diversity in terms of socio-cultural values, advantages etc. Apart from our differences due to our social charactersitics, I would also present culinary and coffee products of Indonesia.
